Some development stories wander a bit, this one wandered A LOT.
We needed to make a remote for an e-bike. But the ground kept shifting under our feet.
Being in control of the touch-points of an e-bike’s system is important for brands that want to differentiate themselves. However, the design of the remote must accommodate the design of the rest of the system, not to mention the different ergonomic factors across bike models and handlebar designs.
At first, we thought we were going to focus on the interface for an electric road bike.
But we pivoted and started prototyping concepts for a variety of bike styles.
Eventually we settled on some concepts to choose from. We wanted one version that worked with drop bars and another that worked with flats.
We determined we needed a modular button to control a headlight across multiple bikes and a dedicated remote for city bikes.
